The 10th edition of the Week of Italian Cuisine in the World opens today in Mogadishu, dedicated to the theme “Italian Cuisine: Health, Culture, and Innovation.”
Following a first in Somalia last year, the Italian Embassy organized two dinner events to celebrate Italy’s rich food and wine heritage and highlight the deep cultural ties between Italy and Somalia.
The program of the events is enriched by a pilot project with eight young Somalis, both boys and girls, who participated in a cooking masterclass, thanks to the collaboration with the Italian-Somali associations ASSOIT and RAWDAH Youth Center.
On a broader cultural level, the event also provides an opportunity to highlight the closeness of cuisines between Italy and Somalia, evidenced by the presence of numerous words and expressions of Italian origin commonly used in the Somali food lexicon. This research, launched in 2024 thanks to the valuable collaboration with Professor Cabdalla Cumar Mansuur of the Somali Language Academy in Mogadishu, has been transformed by the event’s media partner, Astaan TV, into a promotional video with a strong communication impact, especially among younger generations, which will be presented during the evenings.
Below is the video message from the Italian Ambassador, Pier Mario Daccò Coppi.
