On Monday 4th November, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in collaboration with the Foundation Med-Or and with UNITAR (United Nations Institute for Training and Research), inaugurated the first day of the Project “Training and Advisory Programme for the Federal Government of Somalia on UN Security Council Membership”.

The initiative is intended to train senior officials of the Government of the Federal Republic of Somalia in view of Somalia’s participation in the United Nations Security Council (two-year period 2025-2026) as a non-permanent member.

The program includes in-person and online modules and focuses on the main current international issues, the structure, working methods and procedures of the UN body, as well as the methods of negotiation, drafting and adoption of resolutions in multilateral contexts.

This project, of excellent academic level and much appreciated by the Somali authorities – who have always hoped for an increase in Italy’s role and involvement in the country – is part of the numerous initiatives carried out by Italy that aim to provide full support to the process of institutional and security consolidation in Somalia in line with Italy’s traditional commitment to education in Africa and with the objectives of the Mattei Plan. which includes training as one of the priority areas of intervention.
