President of the Republic of Italy Sergio Mattarella, President of the Council of Ministers Paolo Gentiloni and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Angelino Alfano, condemn in the strongest terms the terrorist acts that hit Mogadishu on Saturday 14th October, that killed over 300 people and injured nearly 400.
In a letter addressed to the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmajo, from the President of the Republic of Italy Sergio Mattarella firmly condemns the blind violence perpetuated and, in spirit of solidarity, expresses its deepest condolences. “In the fight against terrorism, Somalia can count on the support of Italy. We are sure that in the aftermath of these trying times, the will and determination of the people of Somalia will be strengthened to consolidate the results so far achieved by the process of reconciliation in order to build a peaceful and prosperous future”.
In virtue of the deep historical and cultural bond between Italy and Somalia, Prime Minister Gentiloni assures Prime Minister Hassan Ali Kheyre of Italy’s firm and renewed committment to stabilize Somalia: “The disdain and condemnation that usually accompany terrorist actions are even stronger when these occur in such a vile and brutal manner against those we consider our fellows, such as the people of Somalia.”
“Our thoughts are with the families of the victims, we wish a speedy recovery to those who have been injured”, affirms Minister Alfano. “Italy will continue its efforts to fight terrorism especially within the framework of the United Nations and European Union, in favour of peace and development in the country. We confide in the cooperation between the Federal Government and its Federal Member States to overcome this tragedy and build the long awaited peace and prosperity of the Country”.
