The legalization procedure is aimed at giving validity, for the Italian legal system, to foreign deeds/documents/certificates, verifying the authenticity of the signature affixed to the deed and the legal status of the person who signed it (art. 52 Legislative Decree no. 71/2011; art.33 Presidential Decree no. 445/2000). This formality is replaced by the “Apostille” in the countries party to the 1961 Hague Convention. |

| Authentication of signature | The ordinary term is 30 days | The administrative authentication is intended for the implementation of applications or declarations functional to the issuance of an administrative measure (Articles 3, 21 and 38 of Presidential Decree no. 445/2000).
Notarial authentication is intended for private deeds of a contractual nature, or not strictly connected to a provisional act of the Public Administration. It consists of the certification that the signature was affixed in the presence of the public official, after prior verification of personal identity and is proof up to a complaint of forgery (art. 2703 of the Civil Code; art. 72 of Notarial Law no. 89/1913, art. 28 and 52 of Legislative Decree no. 71/2011) |

| Maritime navigation | The ordinary deadline is 30 days for proceedings relating to navigation pursuant to art. 2 paragraph 2 of Law no. 241/1990. | The procedures are necessary to:
– exercise the functions of the Maritime Authority in compliance with Italian legislation; – exercise the power of navigation police against Italian merchant ships and civil aircraft; – exercise disciplinary power against the personnel of merchant ships of Italian civil aircraft (Article 48 et seq. of Legislative Decree No. 71/2011); – the conduct of investigations into maritime accidents (the Consular Authority must carry out summary investigations into the causes and circumstances of a maritime accident, and take the necessary measures to prevent the dispersion of things and elements useful for further investigations (Article 578 of the Navigation Code). For any accident occurring, whether on board or on land, due to the ship’s services, and for which a person of the crew has died or has suffered injuries such as to be expected to die or be disallowed for more than thirty days, the consular authority that received the report of the accident shall proceed to an investigation (Presidential Decree of 30 June 1965, no. 1124 art. 55). |
